As we write these lines, the situation with the U.S./Iran ceasefire is uncertain, and it could crumble at any moment. However, no matter what happens, here are key considerations for anti-imperialists.

The ceasefire is a clear attempt by the U.S. to deceive Iran. It is a set of vague promises for future negotiations, whose real purpose is to enable the U.S. and Israel to regroup and rearm right when they were starting to feel real pressure. This ceasefire also risks throwing Hezbollah under the bus and leaving them to fight the Zionist state alone, which would be an absolute betrayal. Those who want the defeat of the U.S. and Israel must be clear: we cannot support a ceasefire without real, major concessions from the U.S.

Trump declared that Iran’s 10-point peace plan could be the basis for negotiations. The achievement of those 10 points—which include the lifting of all sanctions, the payment of reparations, Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz and the withdrawal of all U.S. forces from the Middle East—would indeed be a massive victory for Iran. But whoever believes Trump’s word is a fool. This “deal” simply makes vague promises for future negotiations, which require that Iran must stop fighting and reopen the Strait. This is a trap! Our demand must be: No ceasefire until those 10 points are implemented! No ceasefire as long as Israel pounds Lebanon!

As soon as the ceasefire was announced, many anti-imperialists, Palestinian supporters and socialists proclaimed victory. This is grotesque. As things are in flux and tensions are developing within the resistance over this ceasefire, it is all the more important that socialists stand firm and fight back against those trends who want to conciliate the U.S. All those who are hailing a great “victory” are only helping the wing of the Iranian resistance that wants to stop the fighting and gobble up Trump’s lies—which is exactly what Israel and the U.S. want. For anti-imperialists in the West, where the task is to organize the fight against this imperialist war, talk of “victory” only leads to passivity.

Three weeks ago, we warned about the risk of what is now posed. We wrote:

If…it [Iran] once again accepts a settlement when convenient for the U.S., we will likely see only a pause until the next round of attacks. Moreover, in such a scenario, the damage Iran will have inflicted will surely pale in comparison to the devastating long-term impact of the bombing campaign on Iranian society. As such, a lot hinges on the IRGC’s ability and determination to pursue and escalate the conflict.

The willingness to stop the war for vague promises shows a flinch in the face of the U.S., which must be resisted.
