Chants at Liverpool and London protests rang out: “What’s the thing we all agree? Lucy Letby must be free!” Initiated by the PDC, the protests gathered campaigners and included doctors, retired nurses and other healthcare workers, coming from all points of the political compass.
For the PDC, for the campaign group Nineteen Nurses, and for a growing number of healthcare workers, the question is: Where are the unions? At the London demo a union rep put it squarely: the RCN “abandoned her when she most needed her union”. Why? “Because the leadership of the union was not prepared to go up against the Establishment.... Enough of the silence, enough of the cowardice, enough of the treachery from the union misleaders.” It will take continued struggle to free Lucy Letby. The Criminal Cases Review Commission could refer the case to the appeals court, but there is no guarantee they will do so, or if they do, that she will get a fair (re)trial. It’s a battle for Lucy, but also for the NHS, for healthcare workers: unions must fight to Free Lucy Letby!
