The PDC sent the following 17 August letter to the courts in Ukraine that jailed Bogdan Syrotiuk for writing articles opposing the war. The campaign for his freedom is run by the World Socialist Web Site of which he is a supporter. The Partisan Defence Committee (Britain) adds our voice to the growing chorus of outraged protest at the 15-year prison sentence meted out last week to Ukrainian socialist Bogdan Syrotiuk. To date over 6,000 have signed the petition calling for Bogdan’s immediate release.
Convicted by the Ukrainian court of “high treason”, Bogdan committed no crime but gave voice, in his articles, to what millions in Russia and Ukraine deeply feel. He called for the unity of Ukrainian and Russian workers against a war in which both sides have murderously pursued reactionary objectives.
We note that in the 27 months Bogdan has been detained he has been denied treatment for a serious medical condition: this constitutes torture by the Ukrainian state. In addition we protest the seizure by the state of his electronic devices, books and documents, and demand his property be restored to him.
We demand his conviction and sentence be thrown out! Immediate freedom for Bogdan Syrotiuk!
