After the demise of Your Party, thousands of socialists have joined the Greens, hoping Zack Polanski’s leadership will push the Green Party to the left and even turn it into the socialist vehicle we desperately need.

We believe this is a mistake. However, we are ready to put our views to the test. We encourage socialists in the Green Party to fight for the four basic positions laid down below. These are essential for any party seeking to radically change Britain in favour of working people, let alone fight for socialism.

1) Against Zionism! For a single Palestinian state!

Any party that wants to stand against the British establishment must clearly oppose Zionism and the state of Israel. Any concession on this question is the first step towards capitulation (remember Corbyn). Vote for the motion “Zionism is racism”! Reject any amendments aimed at making it acceptable to Zionists and defenders of a “two-state” solution.

2) Down with NATO! Shut down the bases!

The alliance with American imperialism, embodied in NATO, is vital to the ruling class. Any pro-working-class party worth its salt must stand against NATO. It must also fight in practice to shut down US bases in Britain and British bases abroad. This also means opposing the billions in arms shipments to Ukraine. Put this money into the NHS instead! Make this party policy and central to the party’s campaigns.

3) Abolish the monarchy!

The Greens might have a position against the monarchy, but we never hear about it. Any party that wants to radically transform this society must make abolition of the monarchy a key plank of its campaign. Yet, Polanski has recently threatened to reverse this position in his bid to make the party acceptable to the establishment. Socialists must resist any backpedalling on the monarchy! And no party member should hold aristocratic titles!

4) Expropriate public utilities without compensation!

Polanski has made the nationalisation of public utilities one of its slogans. Good. But what is needed is to nationalise water, transport, energy, and communications without compensation. Why would we give a single penny to millionaire crooks who have looted this country? Take those services; they are ours! Jail the racketeers!

Socialist or Green?

The establishment’s propaganda machine is in high gear to snuff out the radical policies of the Green Party. We’re already seeing the leadership buckle under pressure, trying to present itself as “respectable”. This is why there is so much opposition to the “Zionism is racism” motion, and why trans activist Eleanora Folan was bureaucratically purged. Just like in Your Party, they will use their power to clamp down on socialists. Why? Because despite all its democratic trappings, the Green Party is rooted in middle-class liberalism, not working-class socialism.

This being said, we stand with the socialists in the Green Party in their struggle against Zionism and the right wing of the party. If we are wrong and the Green Party does take a stand on the points we outlined, we will gladly admit our mistake and help build the Green Party. However, if, as we believe, the Green Party leadership cracks down and suppresses the most radical voice, you must not let yourself get discouraged. The key will be to draw the lessons and turn your energies towards building a different party, one which can actually fight for socialism and the working class.
