Fight Against Counterrevolution in Cuba!

Dear Comrades,

It is urgent to defend the Cuban Revolution. As you rightly state in Rizospastis (25 June), the economic and social transformations undertaken by the Cuban leadership constitute a major danger to the Cuban Revolution. These "reforms" will dismantle what remains of the planned economy and allow imperialist economic penetration of the island.

Just as counterrevolution in the USSR was advanced through perestroika, the same is happening today in Cuba. The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) correctly criticized its own previous positions, when it "uncritically accepted the policy of perestroika, considering it to be a policy of reforms in the interests of socialism," and concluded that "a social terrain was created in the course of time for counterrevolution to develop and ultimately prevail, through perestroika" (Decision of the 18th Congress of the KKE).

Comrades, we understand that the situation is very difficult. However, in order to defend the gains of the 1959 Revolution, we must fight against the sell-out by the leadership of the Communist Party of Cuba, whose policies are opening the road to capitalist counter-revolution. It is urgent to build a left opposition against these attacks and against the principal enemy of the Cuban people—none other than U.S. imperialism. This left opposition must fight for:

• Workers’ democracy: open discussion among the working masses to defend the gains of the revolution and to chart a way forward.

• Nationalization of the means of production under workers’ control.

• State control of foreign trade through workers’ committees to eliminate the black market.

In addition, an international anti-imperialist front is necessary to mobilize workers in China, Latin America, the United States, Europe, and elsewhere to break the blockade of Cuba. The international proletariat has the power to break the blockade and send oil to Cuba.

The working class of Greece has every interest in mobilizing to defend the gains of the Cuban Revolution against U.S. imperialism, the main enemy of all workers. There is no time to lose!
