Workers! Comrades! Compatriots!
The Trump administration poses a grave threat to the Filipino people. Trump’s new tariffs will tighten the imperialist chokehold on industries and on the livelihoods of the masses already crushed by the burden of high taxes to pay for the debt and high prices for imported food and fuel. As Trump’s anti-China offensive swings into hyperdrive, the increasing U.S. military presence in the Philippines is pushing the country closer to bloody confrontation with Beijing over Taiwan and the South China Sea.
What is posed is the defense of the nation but none of the left and labor candidates running in the 2025 elections are in open opposition to U.S. imperialism. Instead, the left and union candidates of Akbayan, Makabayan, FFW and PLM have ditched the anti-imperialist struggle to crawl into the utterly pro-U.S. liberal anti-Duterte opposition. The strategy of this opposition is to plead with the American lackey Marcos government and the imperialist-controlled International Criminal Court to repress the Dutertista populists, and to expose the Dutertista opposition for not being supportive enough of Trump’s campaign to strangle China. The left’s ties to the liberal opposition discredit it in the eyes of the masses, who are fed up with the imperialist extortion being administered by the Marcos regime and its liberal bloc partners. Support for the reactionary Dutertista opposition is growing because they appear as the only serious opponents of national humiliation and pauperization.
Our Urgent Tasks and Platform
We urgently need to mobilize the working class to lead the fight against Trump and all factions of the Philippine bourgeoisie. Without this independent working-class pole, there will be national disaster. The Marcos government is clamping down on our democratic rights in the name of suppressing the Dutertista threat. If the Dutertistas bring down the Marcos regime, they will only replace it with a harsher neocolonial order. Whatever the outcome, the ability of the masses to oppose the Trump administration’s offensive will be crippled.
There must be a fight inside the left and workers movement to split with the liberals and their apologists, and build a militant anti-Trump opposition with a program to liberate the nation. As basis for this opposition, we propose the following platform:
- For national liberation! Break the U.S.-Philippine alliance! Smash EDCA and VFA! U.S. troops out!
- Radical agrarian reform now! Form peasant committees! Seize the lands of the oligarchs and the neocolonial masters!
- For national industrialization! Expropriate the imperialists and the Philippines’ Top 10 Billionaires! Cancel the imperialist debt!
