Drop All Charges Against David Huerta!

As thousands of National Guard troops, Marines, FBI and ICE agents were invading Los Angeles in Trump’s war on immigrants, SEIU California president David Huerta was arrested on June 6 for standing up for immigrant workers during a deportation raid. Originally slapped with a federal conspiracy rap, he now faces a one-year prison sentence on trumped-up misdemeanor charges of obstructing federal officers.

This is a blatant attempt to behead the leadership of a union representing over 700,000 workers. The government wants to scare off organized labor from defending their immigrant brothers and sisters, necessitating a fightback by all workers and oppressed. As Huerta declared, “These charges are baseless, they are attempting to silence anyone who dares to speak out, organize or demand justice.”

The SEIU leaders have relied on legal defense and the verbal support of capitalist politicians when they should be throwing the weight of the union ranks behind their president. The government is intent on sending the message that nothing will stand in the way of ICE kidnappings. As Huerta’s case shows, it’s not just immigrants, but also unions that are in Trump’s crosshairs. We must show that we won’t be silenced! Unionists, leftists, community activists: To maximize pressure on the government to drop the charges, fill the courtroom! An injury to one is an injury to all! Justice for David Huerta!
