Let Yves Engler Run!

Right now, there’s a fight going on in the NDP. Radical journalist Yves Engler has just been bureaucratically excluded from running for NDP leadership. The reason? In stark contrast to the rest of the candidates, his campaign is calling for Canada out of NATO, a break with Zionism and freedom for Palestine. These are red lines for the Canadian ruling class!

Engler’s campaign represents a chance to do what Marxist groups in Canada have needed to do for years: connect with workers who’ve had enough of the disastrous Liberal policies and want to go on the offensive against the sell-outs, misleaders and class traitors who have run the NDP and the labour movement into a ditch. These betrayals have driven many workers to the right and into the arms of Poilievre’s Tories.

WHERE IS THE LEFT?

While the Marxist left opposes the pro-imperialist NDP leadership, most are sitting on the sidelines of this fight. For their part, the Revolutionary Communist Party, Canada’s largest Marxist organization, denounces the exclusion of Engler and writes that many workers “are looking for a party that speaks truth to power, exposes the theater of Canadian politics, and puts forward genuine socialist and anti-war policies—whoever it might upset in Ottawa and Bay Street” (11 December 2025, marxist.ca). But working people need actions to go with these words!

Engler’s supporters are mobilizing NOW with demonstrations and meetings against the NDP brass across the country. They are calling on all NDP leadership candidates to stand up for the democratic rights of members. By barring Engler the NDP is showing that once again it will do the dirty work for the ruling class. Any candidate claiming to be a “true alternative” to the Liberals and Tories must immediately suspend their campaign until Engler’s exclusion is reversed.

To challenge and expose the existing leadership of the labour movement, communist initiative is essential, and the RCP comrades are positioned to take this class confrontation to the next level. In fact, all leftist, Marxist and socialist organizations need to step up to the plate (including International Bolshevik Tendency, Communist Workers Circle, What Is To Be Done, Socialist Alternative, CPC and others)! Build a united front against NATO and Zionist influence in the workers movement!
