Anyone who’s against British imperialist rule in the North must defend Christopher Dillon! An 18-year-old Irish republican socialist from Derry, he was slammed in jail on 27 September for going to Portadown to stand in solidarity with Garvaghy Road residents against the Orange Order’s intended hate march.

Christopher Dillon was out on bail, having been arrested on July 12 for wearing a T-shirt with the logo of the INLA, which the imperialists deem to be a “terrorist” organisation. On 27 September, he was jailed for breaching a bail condition that prohibited him from being within 100 meters of a protest. Christopher’s T-shirt bore a picture of Patsy O’Hara, one of the hunger strikers who Margaret Thatcher condemned to death by designating these political prisoners as common criminals. Opposition to British rule in the Six Counties is not a crime! Just as back then, British imperialism today criminalises republicanism and foments sectarian violence to maintain its hold in the North.

The Garvaghy Road residents, and Catholics across the north of Ireland, together with many Protestants, proclaimed “No going back!” to the sectarian violence set off and entrenched by British rule of the Six Counties. “No going back” means we must step up the fight for a united Ireland.

As socialists, we stand with republicans demanding the immediate release of Christopher Dillon. Drop the charges!
