Since June, EFF member Xolani Khoza has faced abduction, persecution, and relentless surveillance and harassment from the Hawks and police on behalf of the GNU and white bosses. To spark resistance, Spartacist/South Africa called for protest when Xolani’s trial began on 2 September, where we carried out a united-front action with ground forces from the EFF’s Ward 29, Enhlanzeni Region. Our two organisations formed the Committee to Defend Xolani Khoza after the state postponed his trial until 27 September (it was then postponed again, until 9 December). The Committee continues to work to break the news blackout of Xolani’s case, raise funds for his legal defence, and mobilise further protests.

From the beginning, we have emphasised the shared interest of all who face austerity and attacks from the GNU in uniting to fight this persecution. The only reliable force that can bring justice for Xolani is mobilisation of the masses in united-front action. This is the best way for trade unions, left groups, and other activists to combine their efforts without giving up their independent political views. “March separately, strike together!” The campaign has so far been endorsed by the following organisations and individuals:

  • Black Consciousness Party
  • GIWUSA
  • International Bolshevik Tendency
  • Lawrence Shilenge, EFF, Ward 29 Enhlanzeni Region & ECWUSA Trade Union
  • Lesson Motha, Chairman, Bolsheviks Branch, EFF, Ward 48 Jo’burg Sub Reg D
