As Britain spirals downwards, the RMT's London Tube strike shows that we don't have to take it lying down as everything gets worse. It also reminds everyone that nothing runs without workers. We deserve better and we can fight back!

But 2025 is not 2022-23. During the strike wave the whole country was looking to the unions. Today there is much less support. A lot of workers never got a real pay rise. And many blame the unions for the hated Starmer government. After all, most union leaders supported him and many still do. To win, the RMT cannot let itself be isolated. It must make the fight for RMT workers a fight for all workers.

This starts with all transport workers. There are countless contractors working for TfL. Many are out of work during the strike. But so far little effort has been made towards unionising them and getting them better conditions too. The same goes for London buses. The conditions for drivers are rapidly deteriorating, and the strike will bring an extra strain.

Contractors, bus drivers, mechanics and many more stand to gain from a victorious strike. But they could also grow resentful if the unions aren't seen to fight on their side. Reach out to them and bring them into the struggle!

Then there is the country as a whole. So far discontent only seems to benefit Farage and the right. This is a dangerous situation. Already the media is using lies and demagogy against the strike. To counter this, we need to make the RMT strike a platform for the anger of the entire working class.

General secretary of the RMT Eddie Dempsey should turn the screws on Starmer and Sadiq Khan. For starters he should demand that all unions immediately withdraw support to Labour unless it takes a basic stand for the workers of this country. At the very least this means: across the board pay rises, no more deportation threats, cancelling the anti-trade union laws, stopping military support to Israel and the US, and of course top-notch conditions for RMT workers!

  • All workers deserve better!

  • Victory to the RMT strike!
