Carney has outrageously invited king Charles III to Ottawa on May 27. To allegedly resist Trump’s attacks, the Liberal government is stressing Canada’s “sovereignty” by parading its head of state—the British crown! This is their way of rallying the population behind “Canadian unity”, i.e., “unity” behind the Canadian capitalists and their beloved King. Wielding this relic of feudal oppression is a provocation against democratic rights, against First Nations, against Quebec, against all victims of British colonialism throughout the world, from Ireland to India, from Palestine to Kenya and beyond!
Their rhetoric aside, the Liberals will bow to Trump and they aim to ensure that workers and the oppressed of this country are restrained by chaining them to their exploiters in the Canadian “Dominion”. For us in the Trotskyist League in Quebec and Canada, mobilizing against the King’s visit is a concrete way of fighting against the Liberal’s “national unity” drive that has also been embraced by the union bureaucracy and that keeps labour chained to its exploiters. Opposing the Crown is thus part of the struggle to unchain the power of labour against the U.S. and Canadian imperialist ruling classes.
We call on all socialists, trade unionists, fighters for democratic rights, the national liberation of Quebec and Indigenous liberation to stand up against Charles III’s visit. We endorse and plan to build the protest called by Youth for Democratic Renewal at 3 pm on May 27 at the Privy Council office in Ottawa, 80 Wellington St., and encourage others to do likewise! Down with the Monarchy!
