Come to the Red Roundtable at the Prometheus Research Library in New York City, where Michael Sturza, author of The London Revolution 1640-1643: Class Struggles in 17th Century England, will talk about the dynamic history of the bourgeois revolutions against feudalism, followed by a discussion. The dramatic events in London were carried out by many thousands of ordinary working people, and resulted in the trial and execution of King Charles I. This little-known history is the original source for democratic ideas and practices eventually codified in the U.S. Bill of Rights.
As the U.S. empire continues to visibly decay, the capitalist rulers are launching new assaults on voting rights and citizenship, freedoms of speech and assembly, while government agents shoot innocent people on big city streets. In Texas, anti-ICE protesters in Prairieland were sentenced to a combined total of 550 years in prison. Defense of democratic rights must be an urgent component in the struggles of workers and the oppressed today. This talk will cover where and how they were won.
